Sound
ILK176LP
Release september 5th
It is the second album by Indianerne, the first being their selftitled CD release in 2007.
Sound is one piece of around 28 minutes duration composed by Kresten Osgood in collaboration with Ed Thigpen, inspired by the musicphilosopher and mystic Hazrat Inayat Khan. It is a combination of text recited by Ed Thigpen and instrumental sections. Sound is released in 300 vinyl copies (45rpm). 150 of them are for sale. No downloads.
Kresten Osgood says:
"The SOUND album was concieved after spending some time with brothers Yusef Lateef and Adam Rudolph in 2008. They introduced me to the writings of Hazrat Inayat Khan and I was so inspired by these beautiful thoughts about music and sound that I approached my mentor and longtime friend Ed Thigpen to propose a collaboration, creating a music that would go along with this poetry of sound. Ed was immediately intrigued as well and that day he ordered his own copy of the book "The Mysticism of Sound". Over the next 6 or 7 months were many visits to Eds home and countless telephone conversations. Ed would call me and say: "turn to page 86. What does he mean by this or that?" I would write a section of the music and come by Eds house and play it for him on his piano. His responces were usually: "thats great! what´s that chord?" or "play that again!". Slowly the form of the whole piece started to appear and in october 2009 we went to Århus to work for 4 days with my large ensemble: Indianerne, which is under the protection of the conservatory in Århus. We did a lot of rehearsing and played two concerts in two different churches in the Århus area. Then, on the last day, we went into the studio and recorded the piece.
I did not know it then but it would be the last thing we did together. The next time I saw Ed was when I visited him at the hospital to kiss him goodbye, a few days before he passed away on January 13th 2010.
After that a long period of grief followed and the way I was able to deal with that was to work on finishing SOUND. I became extremely perfectionistic and spent over a year making many changes in the music. I wanted it to be the testament of my relationship with my musical father, and it was imperative to me that people understood that Ed Thigpen was so much more than Mr Taste, Brush master, Oscar Petersons drummer...you know...clichees. He was a deeply spiritual person with a very open musical mind and he was constantly searching in his art. I overdubbed a string quartet and a choir. Wrote an extra piece (which ends the record) and overdubbed a lot of piano, organ and drums. It came to a point where I thought I would never finish the album because I wasn't satisfied with the mix and the editing. Luckily I was working with Søren Lyngsø Knudsen (aka Vectral) who is a very patient and talented man, and after countless trips to his little studio in Århus I was finally satisfied. I then gave the mix to the great Goodiepal and asked him to take the album out of my hands and finish it. the next time i heard the music Goodiepal had already cut the vinyl master and here it is.
Its still not perfect, but at some point we have to let go and let the music live it's own life. I am proud to present this album and since I have no idea whether it's good or bad anymore I am just happy that it exists. This is also the explanation why its not really a commercial release. Well, it costs money to get it, but thats to cover the enormous expences i have had making it. You can basically only get it of you want to get closer to me and Ed. Send me an email and I will see what I can do"
If you wish to obtain SOUND please send an email to: sound@ilkmusic.com with your name, mailing adress and the number of copies you wish to order.
You will then recieve a reply with an accountnumber on which to transfer the amount of 300 kr plus shippingcosts. Sound will be mailed to you as soon as the money is transfered

Thanks to everyone for coming out despite the weather to check out BSD+B in Aarhus on thursday night - you were a great audience. Although we had some quite stressful rehearsals it was fun to play with Asbjørn, Julie Maria & Silas.
With that behind me I'm getting my mind set for the jazz festivals in Copenhagen and Aarhus in July. I have quite a diverse programme this year ranging from trio to big band with experimental electronics. Check my gig schedule, I hope to see a lot of you people out there!
And some exciting news: We're releasing a new LP with Indianerne feat. legendary drummer Ed Thigpen - it will be out on June 24th. I have heard a pre-mix and it's epic stuff :-)

Right now I'm preparing for the opening concert of Spot Festival in Aarhus. I'm playing with Blood, Sweat, Drum + Bass feat. secret guests ;-) Stop by if you're in town - it's free!
